Benagil Cave is undoubtedly the most famous sea cave in Algarve region. What a lot of people have no idea about, is that there are many other caves along the coast.
The best way to explore the caves in Cabo Carvoeiro area is by joining a boat tour.
Benagil Cave is as beautiful as it looks in the pictures, maybe even more impressive in real life! This may sound like great news, however it also makes it one of the most popular touristic spots. If you want to enjoy the beauty of it without being surrounded by lots of people and children, you should definitely book the first tour available in the morning.
Where is Benagil Sea Cave
Benagil is a small fishing village located in Algarve.
This famous cave also known in Portuguese as Gruta de Benagil, is located next to Praia de Benagil (Benagil Beach), around 150 meters east.
How to get to Benagil cave
You can drive until the cave, but you don’t have access to the inside of the cave itself. You will only be able to see it from the top, it’s impossible to walk down there. It’s still nice to have a look from above, specially if you are planing to go to Benagil beach. Specially during the high season make sure you arrive early in the morning cause the places to park are limited.
Benagil Cave as to be reached via the ocean.
You have 4 different options: swimming, renting a paddle board, renting a kayak or booking a boat tour.
The cave is located just a few meters from Benagil Beach. If you try to swim to reach Benagil cave, it won’t take you longer than 10min. Although we don’t recommend this at all! The Atlantic Ocean has pretty strong and unpredictable currents and tides change quickly as well. Besides, there are lots of boats entering and exiting the cave and some people already died or got seriously injured by them. So if you want to prioritize your safety, please don’t do this!
Renting a kayak or a paddle board at Benagil Beach can be super fun and it’s a great way to exercise as well. Although the price is basically the same of a boat tour.
If you decide to join a boat tour you will not only see the Benagil Cave but also other grottos and caves, rock formations and the breathtaking scenery along the coast.
There are many companies that offer this service, but only one offers a private tour that allows you to disembark and walk inside the cave.
With the other tours you will be queuing to enter the cave, the boat will stay inside for a few minutes so you can click some pictures, but no one is allowed to leave the boat.
